Explore the possibilities of a Dual Language Program in Evergreen Park
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
This Dual Language Program aims to provide a public education in English and Spanish to the elementary schools in Evergreen Park. This experience will enrich our children cognitively and culturally.
English and Spanish Dual Immersion Initiative
What is dual language?
Dual Language teaches all academic subjects in both English and Spanish. English dominant, Spanish dominant, and bilingual speakers develop fluency and literacy skills in both languages. All students affirm the values of their own cultures while acquiring an understanding, appreciation, and acceptance of other cultures.
Why is bilingualism important?
Cultural Benefits of Being Bilingual
Bilingualism sparks a positive change in our society. Dual Language Programs teach children a mutual understanding and respect for minority groups and for people of different linguistic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Dual Language Programs aid in the prevention of language loss in heritage speakers.
Academic Benefits of Being Bilingual
Studies have shown that being bilingual changes the way we use our brains. Bilingual children have better problem solving skills and outperform their monolingual peers on standardized tests. Bilingual students also show an increase in control of attention and a longer memory span. As the children age, bilingualism and multilingualism can delay certain brain deterioration such as Dementia and Alzheimer's anywhere from 5-10 years.
About Us
We are the Lara family. I come from a German family in northern Wisconsin. My family lost their heritage language due to anti-German feelings after WWI. I have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and I am currently working on a Master's in Spanish at DePaul University. I have also lived in Spain multiple times. My husband was born and raised in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. His family is from Mexico. He is a Civil Engineer. We are trying to keep the Spanish language and culture alive by speaking Spanish to our children at home and celebrating different Latino traditions. We decided to start the initiative for a Dual Language Program when we learned that speaking Spanish at home is not always enough to maintain the language. In our research we also learned about the cognitive and cultural benefits these programs can have for both heritage and non-heritage speakers. We believe everyone in our community should have public access to a program like this and that is why we need your help to make this initiative a reality!
